Abstract

987,681. Rotary pumps and motors. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. July 14, 1961 [Aug. 2, 1960], No. 26692/60. Heading F1F. A rotary displacement pump (or motor) has at least one rotor 2 (e.g. two meshing gears) and the pressure-loaded bearing housings 8 are of a material e.g. high-expansion aluminium alloy, which is of higher coefficient of thermal expansion than that of the pump housing e.g. low-expansion aluminium allow, such that, when the housings 8 are held fixed centrally of their length by friction resulting from radial load, the sealing surfaces of side plates 6, 7 remain in contact with the rotor 2 at all variations of temperature within the operating range. There are bronze bearing sleeves 13 and filler sleeves 14, which are of the lowexpansion 36 % nickel-steel alloy known as "Invar" (Registered Trade Mark) so that the total radial expansion of the elements 8, 13, 14 equals that of the rotor 2. The housings 8 are loaded by pump delivery pressure supplied between O-ring seals 10, 11. 1.
