987,639. Transformers. BRUSH ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. March 25, 1963 [Jan. 29, 1962], No. 3319/62. Heading H1T. The noise produced by a transformer core may be reduced by a thin " pneumatic " barrier positioned around the core such that, in the locality of the limbs, it passes between the core and the windings. The barrier has a low density compared with that of the liquid in which the transformer is immersed, since it comprises either a rigid casing, a flexible membrane formed into a closed bag, or a cellular body, filled with a selected gas, the walls being impermeable in each case. In the latter case, the cellular body is formed from a soft framed plastic, the cells of which are mainly non-interconnecting, and has imperme able membranes on its surfaces. The gas, which may be sulphur hexafluoride or fluoropropane, or another gas with high dielectric strength, is under pressure to prevent the cellular body collapsing under the hydrostatic pressure of the transformer oil. Both types of barrier may be provided with openings or gap to allow for the passage of a coolant or of supporting members. If the heat produced by the core is not excessive, the core may be enclosed completely in a gas container.
