Abstract

987,262. Delivering cigarettes in orderly arrangement. K. KORBER. Feb. 9, 1962 [Feb. 13, 1961; Aug. 28, 1961], No. 5071/62. Heading A2C. [Also in Division B8] So that all cigarettes Z 1 and Z 2 (Fig. 5) produced from double length assemblies may have tips or mouthpieces similarly directed, the cigarettes Z 1 in holders 202 are turned end for end by guide means 212, 213 which lift, support and tilt one end of each cigarette while its other end is supported in the region of the holders 202 in a turning plane terminating at the holders 202. Double length mouthpiece cigarette assemblies are bisected on a cutting drum 222 by a circular cutter 225 and fed into alternate holders 202, of which there is an odd number, on a drum 201 where they are retained by guides 227, 228 and 229. The guides 228 are sufficiently spaced apart to allow short or filterless cigarettes to fall away while retaining normal cigarettes. The centre of each holder 202 embodies a recess 204 with arcuate opposed flanks 205 and 206. A guide 211 presses the inward facing ends of the cigarettes Z 1 down into the recesses 204 as the guide 212 starts to raise the other end. After the cigarettes Z 1 have been completely turned they pass under a guide 233 and are joined as they pass the bottom end of it by the cigarettes Z 2 which fill the empty alternate holders 202. The combined rows of cigarettes Z 1 and Z 2 then pass on to be discharged on to a conveyer 231. In another embodiment, Fig. 7, the cigarettes Z 1 are turned by means of a guide 118 assisted by suction and air pressure supplied through ducts 104 in holders 102. As the cigarettes Zi travel through sections D, E and F suction and air pressure are applied through the ducts 104 as indicated by the vertical arrows in Fig. 14 for section D, Fig. 16 for section E and Fig. 17 for section F. The air pressure applied during the passage through section F ejects short or other faulty cigarettes that have been left unturned, on to a plate 112. In yet another embodiment the cigarettes Z 1 are turned solely by pneumatic means.
