Abstract
987,249. Brushes. OSBORN MANUFACTURING CO. Jan. 19, 1962 [Oct. 2, 1961], No. 2092/62. Heading A4K. Tufts of uncoated or plastic-coated hard steel wire bristles are twisted, before being set in an elastomeric resin or, alternatively, being fixed in internally coated sleeves 16, so that the ends splay out. The wire is fed intermittently from spool 10 to allow the portion between clamps 14 and 15 to be twisted while copper sleeve 16 is swaged on. The sleeve is coated internally with a resilient plastic. It may be cut by wheel 19 to give two single-ended tufts or, alternatively, the wheel 19 may be operated to give double-ended tufts. The latter may be mounted in a steel shank 26 by means of a set screw 27 and rotated in the chuck of a drill press. The tufts may be supported in mould cavities so that a collar of, preferably foamed, elastomeric resin can be cast around the bases of the bristles and the upper part of the sleeve. The tufts can be used in the manufacture of rotating brushes including end brushes and wheel brushes (Figs. 4-6, not shown). The elastomeric resin may be an epoxy resin, neoprene, or a polyurethane rubber. The bristles may be set in solder and bristles having plastic beads along their lengths are referred to.
