Abstract

The invention comprises complex heavy metal compounds of monoazo dyes, which in the non-metallized state are of formula <FORM:0987074/C4-C5/1> wherein D is a residue of the benzene or b -naphthalene series which contains a hydroxyl or carboxyl group in a position ortho to the azo bridge and X is a reactive acyl residue (i.e. a residue capable of reacting with fibrous materials, especially cellulose, in the presence of an alkali to form a covalent bond). The dyes are prepared by condensing a copper, nickel, chromium or cobalt complex of an azo dye of formula <FORM:0987074/C4-C5/2> with an acylating agent which contains, in addition to the group which acylates the amino group, a reactive acyl residue. Specified acylating agents include cyanuric chloride and its mono-condensation products with ammonia or an amino-, hydroxy- or mercapto-compound, tetra- and tri-halopyrimidines, dihalopyrimidines containing nitro and/or methyl, sulphonic acid, carboyxlic acid chloride or sulphonyl chloride groups, tetrachloropyridazine, b -chloropropionic acid halides, acrylyl chloride, vinyl sulphonyl chloride and a :b -dihalopropionic acid halides. Primary condensation products of the dyes with cyanuric chloride may be further condensed with ammonia or an amino-, hydroxy- or mercapto-compound. The dyes may be used to colour leather, wool, silk, polyamide and polyurethane fibres and preferably, cellulose fibres which are dyed in the presence of an acid-binding agent in grey and blue shades.
