The invention comprises metal complexes, e.g. copper, nickel, chromium and cobalt, of dyestuffs having the general formula wherein Me is a metal atom, R is an aromaticcarbocyclic or aromatic heterocyclic radical in which X is a substituent linked in the adjacent position to the azo group, e.g. -O-or-COOR 1 is H or an alkyl radical and Y is an acyl radical. Y may be obtained from a mono- or poly-functional acylating agent and may contain reactive groups which react with hydroxyl groups of cellulose or with the amide groups of wool to form covalent bonds. They are prepared by reacting a dyestuff containing an -NH-R 1 group in the 2-position of the naphthalene nucleus with a compound, e.g. an acylating agent, introducing the acyl radical Y. Preferred acylating agents containing reactive groups may be of the triazine pyrimidine, pyridazone saturated or unsaturated aliphatic series, the reactive group being halogen, ammonium, alkoxy, aryloxy, thio, alkylsulphonyl, aryl-sulphonyl or aralkyl-sulphonyl. Polyfunctional acylating agents include phosgene, terephthalic acid dichloride, fumaric acid dichloride, cyanuric chloride, pyridine 2,6- dicarboxylic acid chloride, thiophene 2,5- and naphthalene 2,6-dicarboxylic acid chloride. They may be reacted with a mixture of dyestuffs to give asymmetric dyes. Alternatively, the corresponding unmetallized dye may be reacted with a metal yielding agent to form 1:1 or 2:1 complexes. The dyes give grey, blue, violet and brown shades on natural or regenerated cellulose, wool, silk, synthetic superpolyamide and polyurethane fibres.
