987,073. Studs for athletic footwear. A. DASSLER. Nov. 20, 1962 [Oct. 24, 1962], No. 43906/62. Heading A3B. The sole of a sports shoe has thickened portions forming downwardly extending bulges 5, a supporting element 1 with a lateral anchoring projection 3 is embedded in each bulge and the sole portion above, and a detachable spike or stud 9 is received in each element, each spike having laterally extending flange 12 to increase the braking surface of the spike and the undersurface of each bulge extending laterally beyond the flange of the corresponding spike. The supporting elements are positioned during the operation of vulcanising or spraying the sole so that the material of the sole penetrates through perforations 8 and prevents rotation of the elements. Each element extends from the top surface of the sole to the bottom surface of the bulge, and is internally threaded to receive the threaded spigot 10 of the spike. Flange 12 has a flat upper surface to engage element 1 and an embedded lower surface, and has recesses 13 to receive a tool for tightening or loosening the spike.
