My invention relates to anti-slip devices for footwear, and more particularly to such devices as are adapted to be detachably connected to footwear to facilitate walking on snow or ice.
With the foregoing in view, it is an object of my invention to provide an improved article of footwear including means for readily detachably connecting anti-slip devices to the heel and sole portions thereof,
A further object is to provide in combination with the sole and heel portions of an article of footwear novel means for readily detachably connecting anti-slip devices thereto.
A further object is to provide improved antislip devices for footwear and novel means for readily detachably connecting the same to footwear.
A further object is to provide a novel combination with the sole and/or the heel portions of an article of footwear of means providing recesses in marginal edges of the sole. and heel portions, which recesses do not penetrate the sole and heel portions to the interior of the article of footwear, and means for detach-ably connecting antislip devices in said recesses.
Other objects and advantages reside in the particular structure of the invention, combination and arrangement of the several parts thereof, the structure of the several elements forming the same, all of which will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art upon reference to the attached drawing in connection with the following specification, wherein the invention is shown, described and claimed.

Figure 1 is an elevational view of the sole and heel portions of an article of footwear formed according to the invention;
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view thereof;
Figure 3 is a view like Figure 2, but showing one form of anti-slip means applied to the article of footwear;
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary transverse vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Referring specifically to the drawing, wherein like reference characters have been used throughout the several views to designate like parts, and referring at first to the form of invention disclosed by Figures 1 to 4, inclusive, [3 designates generally any suitable article of footwear such as a boot or shoe, which includes a sole portion l4 and a heel portion I5. The heel portion [5 may be provided with a laterally outwardly-directed groove [6 in the marginal edge portion thereof and a depending marginal flange ill. A plurality of spaced apertures H! are formed through the floor of the groove l6 and the flange l1. Any suitable flexible anti-slip member 19 is adapted to be laced through the apertures l8 whereby to underlie the free edge of the flange l1 and provide an anti-slip tread for the heel portion 15. The free ends of the flexible member I9 may be secured by knots 20, whereby the antislip member is secured in place.
The sole portion 14 may likewise be formed with a laterally outwardly-directed groove 2! in the marginal edge thereof and also with a depending marginal flange 22. A plurality of apertures or holes 23 open through the floor of the groove 2! and down through the flange 22. Any suitable flexible member 23 comprising anti-slip means is adapted to be laced through the holes '23, where by to extend across the under surface of the sole It to provide an anti-slip tread for the sole. The ends of the flexible member 23 are secured against unlacing by knots 24 tied therein, as shown in Figure 3. Obviously, instead of lacing the flexible member 23 across the under surface of the sole M, as shown, the same might be looped over the under surface of the flange 22 as is the anti-slip member l9 looped over the flange ll of the heel. Likewise, the anti-slip member IQ for the heel l5 may be laced across the under surface of the heel as is the anti-slip member 23 for the sole Hi.
It is noteworthy that in the thus described] form of the invention, the holes l8 or 23' are formed and accomplished respectively without forming holes entirely through the soles or heels of the boot or shoe. Thus, the moisture which is always present when the anti-slip devices according to the invention are in use cannot penetrate to the interior of the boot or shoe, and the waterproof qualities of the soles and heels are maintained. At the same time, the anti-slip means in the form of the invention are readily detachable from the boot or shoe, whereby the same may be worn indoors without marring floors, and yet may be sole and heel vportions,,sueh soletandiheel portionseach including marginal edges formed. therealon'gj:
