Abstract

986,947. Glow plugs. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Aug. 13, 1963 [Sept. 28, 1962], No. 31905/63. Heading F1B. [Also in Division H5] A glow plug used in the ignition systems of diesel engines comprises a heating coil 16 to which is attached a hollow terminal 13 and which is housed in a metal sheath 14, electrical connection between the coil 16 and the sheath 14 being made by crimping the end of the sheath on to the coil and closing the end of the sheath by welding or the like, the coil 16 being spaced from the sheath 14 by a frangible magnesium oxide tube 18, powdered magnesium oxide being introduced into and around the coil 16 through the tubular terminal 13, the sheath being closed by a disc 21 over which the end of the sheath is bent as at 22, the construction of the plug being completed by crimping the end of the hollow terminal 13 and swaging the sheath 14 down to a lesser diameter so crushing the tube 18 and elongating the heating coil as shown in Fig. 3.
