Abstract

986,166. Fuel supply systems. F. GRESTY. Feb. 6, 1964 [Nov. 6, 1962], No. 41962/62. Heading F1B. [Also in Division B7] In a vehicle with two fuel tanks 1, 2 and a selector valve to determine which tank should supply an engine which drives the vehicle and auxiliary apparatus such as a mixing drum, means are provided whereby the vehicle is immobilized when tank 2 is supplying the engine. When the vehicle is travelling engine-driven lift pump 3 supplies fuel from tank 1 through non- return valve 5 to injector pump 34. When the vehicle stops and control 25, outside the drivers cab is moved to the left hydraulic fluid from the auxiliary apparatus drive passes through priority valve 33 first entering conduit 32 to actuate hydraulic ram 36 to operate the vehicle brake pedal 31 or apply a transmission brake and then entering conduit 28 to interconnect the inlet 14 and outlet 15 of fuel control valve 7 through annulus 17 and closing switch 23 to energize electric pump 6. The pump 6 then supplies fuel from tank 2 to injector pump 34 through flowmeter 9 and non-return valve 8 which is set to pass fuel at a higher pressure than valve 5 thus closing valve 5 and preventing intermixing of the fuels. The injector pump 34 may be replaced by a carburetter and selector valve 7 may be actuated otherwise than hydraulically.
