Abstract

892,049. Reciprocating pumps. LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd., JOSEPH. July 4, 1958 [April 10, 1957], No. 11683/57. Class 102(1) [Also in Group XXIX] A hydraulic pump c for use in a hydraulic power transmission means for road vehicles has its swash-plate e or other displacement varying means adjusted by a servomotor g supplied with motive fluid from the pump, and an auxiliary pump p is provided for supplying motive fluid to the servomotor when the main pump c is at or near zero displacement. The servomotor g takes up a position corresponding to the position of a control valve i adjusted by a driver's lever o. When the lever is moved to a position corresponding to zero or near zero displacement of the pump a striker x on the lever engages a plunger w which depresses a plunger u to move a valve s to a position in which it interconnects the main conduits a, b of the pump c. The auxiliary pump b then discharges through spring loaded valves q into the conduits a, b so that pressure is available for operating the servomotor. This pressure passes to the servomotor through spring loaded valves m. When the main pump c is again operative one of the valves q, depending upon which of the conduits a, b is at higher pressure, closes whilst the other allows the auxiliary pump to maintain a minimum pressure in the system. Surplus flow from the pump p discharges through a spring loaded valve r. The valve s also serves as a safety valve to limit the pressure in either of the conduits a, b by moving against either of a pair of loading springs t to interconnect these conduits in the event of excessive pressure in either of them being applied to cylinders y.
