Abstract

A monomer of formula R-O-R1 where R is an epoxidized saturated cycloaliphatic ring system of at least 6 carbon atoms in which the epoxy group may be present in a side chain and which ring system may be substituted, and R1 is a vinyl, alkenyl, cycloalkenyl or aralkenyl radical or the acyl residue of an unsaturated monocarboxylic acid or of an unsaturated polycarboxylic acid of which the remaining carboxyl group(s) may be free or symmetrically or unsymmetrically esterified is polymerized alone or with one or some polymerizable monomers in the presence of a polymerization catalyst to give a polymer or copolymer of an unsaturated ether and/or ester of epoxidized cyclic secondary alcohols. The polymerization may take place in suspension, emulsion or bulk at 40 DEG to 90 DEG C. or in solution at - 80 DEG to + 160 DEG C. Specified monomers are those in which R is the residue of 3 : 4-epoxy-tricyclo-[5,2,1,02,6] -decanol-9 or of 5,6-epoxy-2-hydroxybicyclo: [2,2,1]-heptane or of 6,7-epoxy-1 : 4 : 5 : 8 - dimetheno - decahydro - beta - naphthol or of 4,5 - epoxy - cyclohexanol - 1 or of 4-epoxy -ethyl-cyclohexanol, while R1 may be allyl, crotyl, methallyl, vinyl-cyclohexyl, 2-ethyl-hexenyl, vinyl-phenyl, cyclo-petenyl, or the acyl residue of undecylenic hydrosorbic, pyroterebic, maleic, fumaric, itaconic, aconitic, citraconic, mesaconic, hydromuconic, dimeric, sorbic or dimeric linoleic acids. Specified comonomers are vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, vinyl butyrate, vinyl formate, vinyl bromide, vinyl fluoride, acrylonitrile, styrene, vinylidene, chloride, fluoride and cyanide, acrylic or methacrylic acid esters, maleic acid diallyl ester, trimaric acid divinyl ester, vinyl, allyl or methallyl ethers, butadiene, isoprene, dimethylbutadiene, piperyline, cyclopentadieneethylene, propylene, iso-butylene and butylene. Benzoyl peroxide, azoisobutyric and dinitrile and dilauryl peroxide are the specified catalysts. The following monomers are polymerized in the examples: (1) and (2) vinyl acetate and epoxydicyclopentadienyl maleic acid ester; (3) and (4) vinyl acetate and <PICT:0984829/C3/1> (5) and (6) methyl methacrylate and <PICT:0984829/C3/2> (7) to (10) methyl methacrylate and the ester of (1); (11) vinyl chloride and the epoxy compound of (5); (12) and (13) vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate and the epoxy compound of (5); and (14) vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate and the ester of (1).
