983,901. Transverse-flow fans; heat-actuated motors. FIRTH CLEVELAND Ltd. March 10, 1961 [March 11, 1960], No. 8847/61. Headings F1C and F1S. In a transverse-flow fan the flow guide means includes or consists of a guide portion which extends lengthwise of the rotor and is mounted for angular movement about an axis coincident with or parallel to the rotor axis whereby to vary the direction of flow from the fan. One embodiment comprises a pedestal adapted to stand on a table and carrying a housing enclosing a motor which drives a pair of impellers 32, Fig. 4, mounted at either end of the housing. A guide unit 33 for each impeller is mounted on the housing so as to be angularly adjustable about the axis of the impeller to adjust the direction of the outflow. Fixed deflectors 36 extend across the outlet. In the fan shown in Fig. 8, the direction of outflow is slowly moved to and fro by means of a discharge deflector 16 which is reciprocated automatically by a corrugated bimetallic strip 70 through which an electric current is passed to heat it. The resultant thermal movement of the strip 70 tilts the deflector 16 in a clockwise direction. The air leaving the fan then impinges directly on the strip 70, cooling it and returning it to its first position, whereupon the cycle is repeated. In a modification, the bimetallic strip is not corrugated and is heated by a separate resistor. Guard wires 80 may be provided in this and other embodiments to prevent accidental contact with the impeller. Fig. 10 shows a fan in which the deflector 16 is turned by means of a spiral bimetallic strip 101, Fig. 12, disposed within a slot 100 and heated by a heater wire 102. Thermal movement of the strip 101 tilts the deflectors 16 in an anticlockwise direction from the position shown in Fig. 10. Air can then flow through the slot 100, cooling the strip 101 and returning the deflector to its initial position, whereupon the cycle is repeated. In another embodiment, the deflector 16 is reciprocated by means of a crank driven through frictional gearing by the fan motor. The means for oscillating the deflectors 16 may be omitted, the deflector then being adjustable manually to give a required direction of outflow. Any of the above-mentioned reciprocating means may be used to oscillate a pivotal guide member which replaces the fixed guide member 3 shown in Figs 8 and 10. Specification 876,611 is referred to.
