Abstract

982, 763. Sorting according to radio-activity. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Oct. 24, 1961 [Oct. 24, 1960], No. 38119/61. Heading G1A. An arrangement for continuously sorting separate lumps of radio-active material e.g. radio-active ore C which are carried at constant speed and at substantially constant intervals on a conveyer belt 1, has a radio-activity detector 3 located facing the belt detecting radio-activity in a zone 4 by emitting pulses the number of which per unit of time is an increasing function of the radio-activity detected from a lump C passing through the zone 4. The pulses are integrated in a threshold integrator (ratemeter) 8 and when the integrated number exceeds a predetermined value, a blocking signal is fed to a memory 9 preventing it from receiving further signals from the integrator 8 thus avoiding any repetition likely to cause errors in sorting. After a lump C has passed through the zone 4 it passes a photo-electric cell 5 which then transmits a pulse through a line 14 to the memory 9 unblocking it to further signals from the integrator 8 and allowing the stored information to be transmitted to an amplifier 10 the amplified information being fed to a delay unit or second memory 11 which controls an electromagnetic valve 7a which operates an ejector 6 at the moment when a lump of predetermined radio-activity passes, after a period of time equal to D/V where D is the distance between the ejector 6 and the photo-electric cell 5, and V is the velocity of the belt. The detector, which is protected from parasitic radiations by a shield 18 of lead bricks, may be formed from a scintillation detector of a sodium iodide crystal actuated by thallium and a photomultiplication tube. The memory 9 may consist of an annular magnetic core arrangement with a rectangular hysteresis loop and the delay device 11 may consist for example of a univibrator or a blocking oscillator. Where means are provided to vary the speed of the belt or the distance between the photoelectric cell and the ejector it is also necessary to provide means for varying the delay caused by the delay unit 11.
