Abstract

1,014,682. Radiation - sensitive devices. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. April 10, 1962 [May 4, 1961], No. 16214/61. Heading H1K. A semi-conductor body containing a reversebiased PN junction with a thick depletion layer has an additional surface layer of a detector material which responds to radiation (e.g. neutrons) above a predetermined threshold energy level and releases secondary particles (e.g. α-particles) into the depletion zone to cause pulse discharge through the PN junction, means being provided for detecting the discharge pulses so produced. A radiation detector may comprise a plurality of such semi-conductor bodies coated with detector materials having different threshold energy levels.
