Abstract

1,000,044. Radio-chemical analysis. HOESCH A.G. May 24, 1962 [June 28,1961], No. 20051/62. Heading G1A. The chemical composition of metal bodies or melts is determined by irradiating with fast neutrons and analysing the y-rays produced. Fast neutrons from a deuterium-tritium source 13, Fig. 1, are incident on an ingot 11, and γ-rays produced are received by a scintillation detector 14 the output of which may be connected to a pulse height analyser. In Fig. 9, a melt bath 9 is irradiated by a source 213 and a detector 214 detects the metal 211 and slag 111. In modifications of these systems either or both source and detector may have a wide cone of emission or reception, or a small cone scanned over the test object. The cone of reception of the detector may be limited by collimating tubes or by using a colinear array of detectors in a coincidence circuit. A plurality of detectors may co-operate with corresponding detectors to investigate a plurality of areas simultaneously.
