Abstract

960,548. Detecting neutrons. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Aug. 9, 1962 (Aug. 11, 1961], No. 30539/62. Heading G1A. [Also in Division G6] Apparatus for determining the proportion of prompt neutrons emitted by a neutron source comprises a detector coupled to two counting circuits, the first counting circuit having negligible dead time and the second counting circuit having a dead time of the same order as the time delay between the appearance of a free neutron and its detection by the detector. The counts obtained from the two counters can be used to calculate the proportion of prompt neutrons emitted, and the apparatus can be used for testing a sample of plutonium by measuring the number of neutrons produced by spontaneous fission as distinct from neutrons produced by (alpha, n) reactions in impurities. In the Figure the detector 1 comprises six proportional boron trifluoride counters immersed in a paraffin moderator, and its output passes through unit 2 to two lines leading to counters 3 and 5. The first line has negligible dead time, e.g. about 10<-5> seconds, whilst the second line includes a device 4 which introduces a dead time of about 10<-3> seconds; the device 4 may be a monostable multivibrator having an adjustable time constant.
