Abstract

1,213,961. Detecting neutrons. OSTERREICHISCHE STUDIENGESELLSCHAFT FUR ATOMENERGIE G.m.b.H. 5 March, 1969 [5 March, 1968], No. 11641/69. Heading G6P. To determine the cement content of concrete, powdered indium oxide (In 2 O 3 ) is added to the cement and detected after being rendered radioactive by neutron irradiation. The neutron source 3, mounted in the apparatus 2 is moved along the concrete surface 1 to be inspected. The neutron beam scans the concrete surface through the aperture 6 and the radioactive emission from the indium is received by the probe 4, in channel 7. To compensate for fluctuations in the neutron source a flux monitor, erbium, is placed in the lower part of channel 7 and the cement content is derived by measuring the ratio of the counting rates of both the indium and erbium.
