Abstract
1,225,012. 012. Gamma ray analysis of iron ore. SIMON CARVES Ltd. Dec. 11, 1968 [Dec. 13, 1967], No. 56661/67. Heading G1A. The iron content of iron ore is determined by irradiating the ore or a slurry thereof with gamma rays in the energy range 0À04 to 0À1 MeV and measuring the backscattered or transmitted radiation intensity. The source of gamma rays is preferably Am 241 or Tm 170, and the detector may be a scintillation counter, geiger counter or ionization chamber. For backscatter measurements, a scintillation counter with a centrally mounted back-shielded Am 241 source is used. Crushed or powdered ore is investigated on a conveyer having scrapers to produce a uniform thickness (slightly greater than the saturation depth for backscatter measurements); more than one source detector combination may be arranged across the conveyer. Ore slurry may be passed through a cell having an acrylic resinous window for backscatter measurements or two such opposed windows for transmission measurement. If the solids content of the slurry is liable to vary a density gauge may be used in conjunction with the invention. The measurements may be used to control mining and/or handling and/or smelting. The apparatus may be standardized by periodically presenting to it standard samples, methyl methacrylate blocks or a small standardization source.
