Abstract

1421755 Photo-electric analysis of materials BRITISH STEEL CORP 18 May 1973 [18 May 1972] 23388/72 Heading G1A Apparatus for material analysis comprises radio-active sources arranged to project radiation beams of different energies along substantially the same path through the material and sensing means arranged to receive the beams of different energies after transmission through the material to produce outputs respectively representative of the intensities of the beams after transmission. As described, the material is an iron ore sinter mix analyized for carbon content, the sources 4, which are arranged one behind the other to simultaneously project radiation through the material, being Americuim 241 and Caesium 137. The sensing device comprises a scintillation crystal 10, e.g. sodium iodide, and a photo-multiplier 12, or a solid state detector, e.g. lithium drifted germanium, whose output is applied to an analyzer 14 having voltage windows respectively corresponding to selected energy range of the beams. A third window may be provided for random radiations to compensate the outputs. The output of the analyzer is applied to a circuit 16 for direct read-out of the carbon content. The apparatus can be used to analyze material moving on a conveyer, and materials such as coke for ore contamination, coke breeze or coke for ash contamination, iron ore for iron and coal for ash (or volatiles) may be analyzed with suitable choice of radio-active sources.
