Abstract

1328075 Determining dust concentration BERGWERKSVERBAND GmbH 27 Sept 1971 [21 Oct 1970] 44899/71 Heading G1A In an apparatus for determining the dust concentration in an atmosphere a beam of radiation from a source 1 in the wavelength range 800-1000 mm is directed as shown into a chamber 13 and encounters dust particles which scatter the incident beam 5 causing a stray light beam 6. The beam 6 is that portion of the scattered light which diverges out at an angle between 60 degrees and 80 degrees (preferably 70 degrees) from the path of the primary beam 5. The stray light is directed as shown to a receiver 12 which also receives a comparison beam 10 from the light source. The receiver 12 may comprise one photo-electric device which alternately receives each beam, or, it may comprise two photo-electric devices which each receive a corresponding beam. The output from the receiver is fed to a compensator circuit and thence to a meter 14. The beam 10 passes through an attenuator in the form of two polarization plates 8 so that intensity can be selectively altered by rotation of an analyser 9. The analyser 9 is rotated until the meter 14 indicates that the beams are equal in intensity and the angular rotation of the analyser thereby provides a measure of the scattered light and thus a measure of the dust concentration.
