Abstract

798,538. Identifying railway vehicles. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. March 15, 1956 [March 23, 1955], No. 8494/55. Class 105. [Also in Group XL (b)] Railway vehicle identification equipment comprises on the track radiation sources, e.g. radio-active elements such as Sr90+Y90 or Cs137 or sources radiating wave energy in the visible or infra-red part of the spectrum, each arranged to transmit to its associated radiation detector, e.g. Geiger-Muller tubes and, on the vehicle to be identified, a series of discrete radiation absorbent screens adapted to intercept selectively and preferably simultaneously, the radiations from the sources to the detectors to produce signals from the selected detectors which are applied to storage equipment for application eventually to obtain an identity indication, e.g. on a binary digit counter. The signal receiving apparatus, normally ineffective, is rendered effective by the imminent approach of a vehicle for example by a single radiation source carried by the vehicle and arranged to co-operate with an appropriate detector on the track to provide a signal which is used to render the simultaneously operating signal receiving equipments effective at the correct instant as by opening gating devices to such equipments. This single radiation source with its detector may be adapted to provide a signal for a vehiclecounting apparatus. As shown, the radiation sources 3 are mounted in a horizontal line parallel to movement of the vehicle, but they may also be arranged vertically, between the rails, opposite the orifices of detector devices 5 accommodated in a detector housing 4 of suitable radiation absorbent material, e.g. lead. The vehicle 10 to be identified has a device 7 to hold strips 8 of radiation absorbent material rigidly to the vehicle, the strips 8 being arranged to produce a binary number corresponding to the identity number of the vehicle. A single radio-active source 9 affects a detector 12, the signal from which opens gates to allow signals from the detectors 5 to pass into storage equipment 6 and thence to produce the identity indication. When gamma rays are used the detectors may comprise sodium iodide crystals. For detection of beta-rays an open-ended window-type counter such as the applicant Company's halogen quenched-type B.12.H may be used.
