Abstract
1463054 Radiology EMI Ltd 27 Feb 1974 [28 Nov 1972 6 July 1973] 54918/72 and 32422/73 Headings H5 H4D and H4F A method of investigating a body 2 by means of gamma or X-rays which are of an energy such that they are scattered rather than absorbed by the body (0À2 to 2À0 MeV, for example) comprises directing a beam 3 of the radiation from a plurality of different positions while analysing the scattering of the radiation by detectors such as annular scintillators 21 mounted between conical collimators which are "focused" on a point 9 from which scattered rays such as 8 are received. The source and detectors are moved in the X direction relative to the body 2 and can be moved relative to each other in the Y direction by means of telescoping members 11, 14 and 12, 15 so that the point of interest 9 can be scanned over the whole cross-section of the body, and by providing for movement perpendicular to the figure the entire body can be investigated. The scintillators 21 can be divided into segments or a lead disc with a radial slot can be rotated in front of them to investigate variations in scattering in different directions corresponding to various # values. Data representing the direction and energy of the scattered radiation is processed in a computer to determine the location of scattering centres in the body.
