Abstract
1400182 Testing soil using radio-activity COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 22 June 1972 [30 June 1971] 29289/72 Heading G 1A In a soil testing device comprising a probe 2 containing a radiation source 3 and detector 4 whose output is amplified at 5 and supplied to measuring arrangement 12, the probe is moved in a borehole 1 in a series of steps and at the end of each step a record is made of the radiation intensity and of other parameters associated with the probe movement. The source emits fast neutrons which are diffused in the soil and return to the detector, which has an annular shield, as slow neutrons. The output from the measuring unit 12 is supplied to circuitry, Fig.2 (not shown) including a recorder (18). The circuitry also contains units which generate signals indicative of the distance between steps, the time per step, the distance below ground of the probe. The units are controlled by a central control unit (22) driven by a clock generator (15). When the apparatus is used to measure the penetration of irrigation water into the ground, its output may be used to control an irrigation flowrate.
