Abstract

1281403 Determination of tritiated water in air UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 20 April 1970 [24 April 1969] 21127/69 Heading G1A The presence and quantity of tritiated water in air is determined by drawing air from the atmosphere by pump 2 through filter 2 and via pipe 4 into bubbler 3. Tritiated water vapour is removed from the air which exits via pipe 5. The water is continuously circulated by pump 7 in a closed loop including solids filter 8 and a spiral passage through an anthracene scintillator 9. A photo-multiplier, which is lead shielded and thermoelectrically cooled, is optically coupled to the scintillator and pulses therefrom are fed via an adaptor to a logarithmic ratemeter which gives a continuous indication and a record. The detector may be associated with a ring of guard counters and coincidence techniques used to obtain a measurement free of errors due to background.
