Abstract

1,216,561. Monitoring radioactive particles. V. G. BABICH, A. K. KURSKY, K. P. MARKOV, N. V. RYABOV and K. N. STAS. 16 Jan., 1968, No. 2347/68. Heading BIT. [Also in Division G1] An instrument for determining both the particle concentration by weight and the radioactive concentration of an aerosol, comprises a conduit 2, through which an aerosol sample is drawn so as to pass through a filter 4, a radioactive source 6 positionable in the conduit upstream of the filter, and a radiation detector 8 located dawnstream of the filter. In measuring the radioactive concentration of the aerosol particles deposited on a strip 4 when a sample is drawn through by pump 12, the source 6 is in its retracted position and the radioactivity of the deposited particles is measured by detector 8, connected to a recorder 10, and meter 11. The measurement of the particle weight concentration comprises two steps. Firstly, a clean filter is moved over the port 3. The α-particle source 6 is moved into the conduit and the radiation transmitted by the filter, representative of the filter thickness, measured by detector 8 and recorder &c. The source 6 is retracted and the aerosol sample drawn through the filter. The source 6 is replaced and a second measurement carried out. The intensity of the source 6 is much higher than that of background radioactivity residing in the deposited aerosol particles. The use of an alpha particle absorbing collimator 9 further reduces the effects of background on the measurement. The first measurement is subtracted from the second 'to provide a value proportional to the deposition thickness and thus the particle weight concentration.
