Abstract
1,254,539. Photo-electric measurement of recording tape level fluctuations. AGFAGEVAERT A.G. June 16, 1969 [June 26, 1968], No. 30381/69. Heading G1A. Fluctuations in recording level of magnetic recording tape due to variations in structure of the magnetizable layer, are monitored by measuring light scattered from the surface of the layer. The layer comprises a non-metallic binder in which are dispersed magnetic particles oriented in a particular direction. The light is guided on to the surface by a vertical tube to produce a substantially parallel beam incident normal to the surface. Scattered light is measured which energizes in two separate directions, one direction being in a plane parallel to the direction of orientation of the particles and the other in a plane at right angles to this plane. The intensities may be measured separately or combined as to form a ratio. Light pipes can be used to select the two directions and guide light to photo-multipliers. The measuring apparatus is calibrated using tapes of known (including zero) level fluctuations.
