932,536. Nuclear particle discriminators. PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN N.V. May 7, 1962 [May 10, 1961], No. 17480/62. Class 40 (3). An arrangement for discriminating between the arrival of neutrons and gamma radiation comprises a scintillation crystal 1 and photomultiplier 2. A proportion of the output from dynode 4 is applied to a long-time-constant circuit which effects integration to give . an output from a single scintillation as indicated at 16. The output from dynode 5 is fed to a damped oscillatory circuit to give a waveform such as indicated at 17. With gamma radiation the pulse 16 is considerably shorter than is the case with neutron detection and the constants of the oscillatory circuit are arranged to be such that when the waveforms 16 and 17 are added in the amplifier 19 there is no negative-going part of the resultant in the case of neutrons but there is such a part in the case of gamma radiation. This distinction is used to separate pulses due to the different kinds of radiation; for example, a detector circuit 20, 21, low-pass filter, and amplitude discriminator 27 enables neutron pulses to be separated out and used to control a gate circuit in the output line from photo-multiplier 2. The device may also be used for distinguishing α-partioles from protons or α-particles from deuterons. Specification 823,263 is referred to.
