982,756. Magnetic compositions. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Dec. 13, 1963 [Dec. 21, 1962], No. 49287/63. Heading H1H. In the preparation of magnetic ferrite cores having square-loop characteristics the sintering and/or annealing step is carried out in a controlled atmosphere of air containing up to 3% water vapour. In an example a ferrite comprising 40% Fe 2 O 3 , 55% MnO and 5% CuO is prepared. The mixture is calcined between 600‹ C. and 1000‹ C. for 30 min. to 180 min., pulverized, presintered, reground, pressed into shape after a binder (polyvinyl alcohol) and lubricant (dibutyl phthalate) have been added, and sintered at a temperature between 1100‹ C. and 1500‹ C. for a period from 2 minutes to 4 hours. It is then annealed at a lower temperature (900‹ C.) for 10-15 minutes in air containing ¢%-3% water vapour. This airwater vapour atmosphere may also be used during the sintering step. Other ferrites specified are MnZn, NiZn, MgMn, Mn, Ni, Zn, Cu and Mg ferrites.
