Abstract

982,083. Planting machines. M. WESTAWAY. Dec. 20, 1963 [Sept. 20, 1962], No. 35807/62. Heading A1D. A planting machine comprises trays 19 pivotally mounted on a conveyer chain 13 and each shaped to carry a potato or other tuber, the trays sliding along a horizontal platform 26 to enable them to be each loaded with a potato from containers 12 by operators standing on platform 11. As the conveyer moves downwardly the trays are maintained level by contact with an inclined rail section 27 and a pin 30 on each tray contacts a cross-bar 31 to sharply tip each tray to deposit each potato in a furrow formed by a shoe or coulter 43 the potatoes being covered with soil by means of discs 45, 46. As shown the machine is attachable to the three point linkage of a tractor and the chain conveyers are driven by gearing from landwheels 7. Alternatively the machine may be driven from the tractor power shaft.
