A potato planting machine of the type comprising an endless cup chain having a flight movable upwardly through a potato hopper, also comprises additional chain links and a trough and guide wheel 11, 12, wheel links enable the chain to be extended in length, and which trough and guide wheel, when attached to the machine defined a substantially horizontal flight 14 of the extended chain. When the chain is not extended, potatoes placed in the hopper will be picked up by the chain moving therethrough. When the chain is extended, in the case of planting germinating potatoes, the potatoes are placed on the substantially horizontal flight 14 by an operator. The trough and guide wheel may be formed as a unit.
