[Also in Division F2] The piston I of a compression ignition engine is pivoted on the crown thereof with a loose member 8 which, when the piston decelerates near top dead centre, moves away from the piston so that a spigot thereon enters a recess 13 and compresses mixture therein to a pressure above the spontaneous ignition temperature so that the ignition in the recess initiates combustion in the mixture in the remaining cylinder space. Alternatively, the spigot may be on the cylinder head and the recess in the member 8. The member 8 is secured to the piston in a loose but fluid tight manner by a bellows 11, the space 14 being filled with a coolant such as sodium into which project cooling ribs 12 of the member 8. Fuel-air mixture is drawn into the cylinder and the compression produced by the piston 1 in the main cylinder space is insufficient to produce spontaneous combustion. Holes in the member 8 assist the transfer of gases from one side thereof to the other. In a modification, Fig. 8, circular ribs 12 on the member 8 interleave with similar ribs projecting from the body of the piston and formed, for example, of copper.
