981,434. Cigarette-making machines. ZAVODY V. I. LENINA PLZEN NARODNI PODNIK. June 21, 1961 [June 27, 1960], No. 22383/61. Heading A2C. In a method of cutting paper strips from a continuous band of paper and for transferring them to a cigarette making machine for further processing, the feed device for the paper strip performs a continuous, periodic motion, whereby at the instant of transfer of a strip from a feed drum the peripheral speed of the drum is modulated to a speed equal to that of a cigarette that is to receive the strip, while at the instant of cutting the peripheral speed of the feed drum is less than that momentarily acquired at the instant of transfer but greater than the speed of the continuous band from which the paper strips are cut. A feed drum 1 is rotatably carried on a hollow shaft 2 and is rotatable in a bush 4. Suction is applied to the surface of the drum 1 via passages 23, 22, 21, 5 and 3 between the time the strips are cut and the time they are transferred to the cigarettes on a drum 24. A rotating cutter head 7 is driven in synchronized motion with the feed drum 1 as by gears 14, 15. The cutter head 7 is provided with blades 8 yieldingly pivoted on pins 9. To modulate the speed of the shaft 2, a sprocket 30, integral with a plate 32, is rotatably mounted on a shaft 31. The plate 32 is connected through a spindle 33 with a toothed segment 34 having an arm 35 provided with a cam follower 36 which runs in a cam track 37. The segment 34 meshes with a pinion 35 carried by shaft 31 and the shaft 31 meshes through gears 38, 39 with the shaft 2.
