Abstract
981,017. Tankers. PHS. VAN OMMEREN N.V. Jan. 9, 1964 [Jan. 9, 1963], No. 1105/64. Headings B7A, B7M and B7S. In a tanker having a cargo-carrying portion which is divided by longitudinal bulkheads to provide permanent ballast tanks 6, 7 and cargo tanks 5, said ballast tanks occupy between 20% and 40% of the total crosssectional area of said portion, the depth of the tanker being at least 10% more than the sum of its draft and its prescribed freeboard. The longitudinal bulkheads may be vertical (20 in Fig. 4) or curved (21 in Fig. 5) with all reinforcing and stiffening disposed on the outer sides so that the inner sides defining the cargo tanks are smooth. In order to increase or decrease the rolling stability of the ship, depending on its size, a decrease or increase in the free liquid surface area of the cargo is obtained by sloping and/or shaping the bulkheads (22 in Fig. 6, 25 in Fig. 7, 28 in Fig. 8, 36 in Fig. 11). In Fig. 10 the cargo tank defined by the longitudinal bulkheads 35 is provided with a longitudinal central partition. The tanker of Fig. 9 has two cargo tanks 5, the bulkheads 31 defining the ballast tanks 6, 7 and bulkheads 32 forming a cofferdam 40 which may be used to hold ballast.
