Abstract

980,991. Vaporizing solid carbon dioxide. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 25, 1963 [March 23, 1962], No. 11201/62. Heading B1B. Gaseous carbon dioxide is produced at a substantially constant predetermined pressure from solid carbon dioxide, contained in a thermally-insulated bin 2, by passing hot gaseous carbon dioxide into the bin through inlet 7, this hot gaseous CO 2 being a portion of the gas previously evolved from the solid CO 2 and then passed to inlet 7 through pipe 14 which is associated with heater 13. Gaseous CO 2 withdrawn through outlet 5 is the product required, e.g. for use as a shield in arc welding. In the apparatus shown, a block 10 of solid CO 2 is supported on a grid 4. The gas to be recycled is withdrawn from the bin via outlet 6 by fan 11, driven by electric motor 12; and the gas then flows over an electric heater 13 in pipe 14 before it enters inlet 7. A pressureresponsive element 16, in branch pipe 17, is adjusted so that when the pressure of the gas rises above the desired value the electric supply to motor 12 and heater 13 is interrupted, and when the pressure falls again to the desired value the electric supply is reconnected.
