[Also in Division Fl] In operating rectifying column 1, which is supplied with the mixture-to-be-separated at point 13 and which is maintained under vacuum by pump 12, the less volatile fraction is withdrawn from sump 2 via cooler 8 by reciprocating positive displacement pump 9, a vacuum being temporarily applied to the pumping chamber of pump 9 during the pumping stroke (see Division Fl). The less volatile fraction is received in aerated tank 11. The liquid in sump 2 is maintained at a given level.
