Abstract

979,116. Pipe couplings. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. Nov. 11, 1963, No. 44512/63. Heading F2G. An aircraft having an airframe within which is mounted a jet engine, contains a fluid duct having two parts, one part of which is connected to the airframe, the other being connected to the engine, the said parts being movable into and out of sealing engagement with each other and containing means for effecting alignment of the parts, means sealing the two parts when separated, said sealing means being resiliently urged towards each other, and means effecting opening of the sealing means when the two parts are brought together. As described, a ball-and-socket joint 13, 15 is mounted to the airframe 10 and contains a spring-loaded valve member 22 slidable in a spider 20 and carrying a sealing ring 23 engageable with a valve seal 24 of the socket 15 and also carrying an abutment member 43. A cylindrical duct portion 16 connects the socket 15 with a frusto-conical portion 41 adapted to engage ball-bearings 40 mounted in a flange 39 of a spring-loaded sleeve 36 to centre the duct 26. The duct 26 contains a similar valve member 32 to the duct 16, the thrust members 43, 44 serving to open the valve on contact. The duct 26 terminates in a ball-and-socket joint 45, 46, secured to the engine casing 11.
