978, 512. Wide angle abutments. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan. 22, 1962 [Jan. 25, 1961], No. 2233/62. Heading G2J. To increase the angle of field of an objective L0, three or more afocal systems, each consisting of a positive lens L4, L6, L8 ... and a negative lens L3, Ls, L7 ..., are disposed as the long conjugate side of the objective L0 with their axes parallel to the optical axis of the objective. The positive lenses may be integral as also may the negative lenses, the two lens units being mounted in a casing. This casing 18 may be pivoted to the objective end of a telescope 15 so that it may be moved into the light path when it is desired to increase the field of view. The lenses of each afocal system may be cylindrical so that the angle of view is increased in one direction only.
