Abstract
978,137. Discharging metal melting furnaces. UPTON ELECTRIC FURNACE CO. Inc. Nov. 14, 1962 [April 2, 1962], No. 43148/62. Heading F4B. In a furnace for melting metals, e.g. aluminium, of the type having an interconnected pair of chambers discharged through a pouring spout in one chamber by movements of a plunger in the other chamber, chamber 14 receiving the plunger 24 is filled with molten salt flowing into the bottom of chamber 15, which is provided with a discharge spout 22 for the molten metal, flow of such metal being stopped by raising an auxiliary buoyant displacer 25. The latter is suspended on a pivoted lever 35, counterbalanced by a weight 35a and held by a pivoted latch 37 urged by a spring 41 and engaged by the cranked arm 42, 43 of an hydraulic valve 32 having a handle 33. Movement of said handle to position L actuates an hydraulic cylinder lowering plunger 24 into the molten salt in chamber 14 and causing displacement of metal through spout 22, Fig. 6 (not shown). Further movement of handle 33 to position R, Fig. 7 (not shown), reverses the plunger 24, but also moves latch 37 in a clockwise direction, releasing lever 35 and causing the auxiliary displacer 25 to move upwardly to its floating position and immediately stopping flow of metal. Restoration of handle 33 to its neutral position N often causes the parts to resume the position shown ready for the next pouring.
