[Also in Division B8] Measured quantities of molten metal for use in pressure casting are displaced over the spout 26 of a crucible 18 by the downward movement in successive steps of a plunger 24 and after each step the plunger is raised slightly so that the metal falls in the narrow neck of the crucible to a level 21 which is within the furnace 14 and which presents a minimum surface to the air. The plunger 24 is counterbalanced by a weight 34 attached by a cable 36 to a rod 28 and the rod has spaced studs 40 which are engageable by spring-loaded or counterweighted pawls 42, 44. The pawl 42 is pivoted on the piston-rod 64 of a piston 66 of a cylinder 68, and the pawl 44 is pivoted on a cross-member 56 secured to a cylinder 76. When pressure fluid, such as compressed air, is supplied through a conduit 90, it is fed below the piston 78 in the cylinder 76 connected to the cross-member and passes through a conduit 94 to the space above the piston 66. The cylinder 76 moves down and the pawl 44 lowers the plunger 24 until the level of molten metal rises to the level 23 of the spout. The piston 66 also moves down and its longer stroke, through the pawl 42, causes the plunger to move further down and displace the required quantity over the spout; the lower pawl 44 meanwhile clicks over a stud 40. The supply of compressed air is then reversed and both pawls move up; the plunger follows the movement of pawl 44 until it is arrested and the upper pawl 42 then clicks over a stud 40. A stop in the path of the weight 34 or of the top 40 may limit the downward travel of the plunger. Slotted nuts 74 and 84, which can be opened and closed by a screw 86, adjust the range of movement of the pawls.
