Abstract
978,127. Transfer moulding press. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Jan. 10, 1963 [Oct. 10, 1961], No. 36316/61. Heading B5A. [Also in Division B3] A single-ram moulding press has between its two platens, a mould, a plunger for driving material under pressure into the mould, a piston around the plunger, and a fluid-pressuretransmitting means held against the ends of the piston and plunger remote from the mould, whereby when the press is loaded with material between the plunger and the mould and one platen is driven towards the other, the piston advances and deforms the pressure-transmitting means which forces the plunger to drive the material into the mould. In the first example, Fig. 1, the invention is applied to a transfer moulding press comprising platens 1 and 2, mould parts 4 and 5, a transfer pot 10 and a plunger 9 within an annular piston 6. A deformable bag 7 containing an incompressible fluid is located against the plunger and piston by a plate 8. When the ram 3 moves the platen 2 upwardly the piston 6 deforms the bag 7 the centre part of which pushes the plunger downwardly into the transfer pot 10. In another example the invention is applied to a metal draw press. In a final example two annular pistons having a last motion interconnection are provided. The outet piston moves during part of the platen stroke before picking up the inner piston to increase the speed of plunger movement.
