A compression refrigeration system for a road vehicle comprises two compressors C 1 and C 2 connected in parallel, the former being driven by a mains voltage electric motor M when the vehicle is stationary and the latter by the vehicle engine G when the vehicle is in motion. Pairs of fans F 1 and F 2 associated with the condenser A and evaporator E respectively are driven by mains voltage A.C. motors J when the vehicle is stationary and by D.C. motors K energizable from the vehicle electrical system when the vehicle is moving.
