Abstract
977,939. Liquid fuel burners. ESSO RESEARCH & ENGINEERING CO. Jan. 17, 1962, No. 1705/62. Heading F4T. [Also in Division H3] A device for atomizing liquids, e.g. heating oil, comprises a transducer 14 formed of a thin disc of piezo-electric material 16 bonded to the larger end of a conductive metallic resonator, e.g. of aluminium, 18 of truncated conical form, through both of which is an axial hole 20. Fastened to piezo-electric element 16 in alignment with this hole is a liquid fuel conduit 22 which includes a solenoid-operated stop valve 24. The piezo-electric element 16 forms part of a thermionic valve oscillator (see Division H3), whereby the transducer is driven at a supersonic frequency, the resonator 18 vibrating longitudinally with a maximum amplitude at its tip; the liquid is delivered to and atomized at this point. The stop valve 24 is closed in the absence of electrical oscillations, which when present are fed over capacitor C 7 to a rectifier 28, the output of which is smoothed by capacitor C 8 and supplied to relay 26, whereby contacts T3, T 4 are closed to energize solenoid-operated stop valve 24 and permit liquid to flow.
