Abstract
951,537. Ultrasonic atomizers. ESSO RESEARCH & ENGINEERING CO. March 1, 1962 [March, 7, 1961; July 28, 1961], Nos. 38377/61 and 27442/61. Heading B2F. [Also in Divisions F4 and H2] An ultrasonic atomizer comprises a leadzirconate-titanate crystal I, Fig. 1, having a channel 5 for the passage of liquid to be atomized to the grooves 4 on atomizing face 2 and a means to vibrate the crystal at its resonant frequency or harmonic thereof. In a second embodiment the crystal 7, Fig. 2, is a hollow cylinder within which is a roll of steel wire gauze 8 interleaved with shim 9. Liquid to be atomized is in trough 10 and as crystal vibrates liquid traverses the gauze and forms a mist of droplets at its upper surface. In a third embodiment an intensifier 11, Fig. 3, is clamped between two hollow crystals 13, 14. Liquid enters an intensifier channel 12 at 15 and leaves a tip 16 in a. fine mist. The vibrating means for the crystal may be a valve oscillator, a rotary oscillator or a circuit employing a p.n.p.n. diode as described in Specification 924,860. When used with combustible liquid the high frequency vibrating means may feed a high voltage piezo-electric transformer, Fig. 4 (not shown), resonant at same frequency as the crystal to provide an ignition spark at a gap.
