Abstract

977, 882. Temperature responsive actuating elements. BRITISH THERMOSTAT CO. Ltd. Feb. 6, 1964 [Nov. 12, 1962], No. 42643/62. Heading G1D. A thermally responsive actuator comprises a bellows capsule 1, 2 connected via a capillary tube 3 to a partially liquid-filled phial 4 directly heated by a surrounding electric heating element 15, the bellows capsule being adapted to act on a spring loaded lever 7 linked to a crank 12 fixed to a rotatable member 13 so that expansion or contraction of the bellows in the capsule results in consequent rotation of the member 13. The expansible member comprises a container 1 and a bellows 2 carrying a push rod 5. As the phial 4 is heated the push rod 5 pivots the lever 7 against the action of a leaf spring 10 to rotate the member 13. The system is charged with a predetermined volume of volatile liquid, through a tube 14 which is then sealed, so that the liquid will completely evaporate at a given temperature thus avoiding damage to the mechanical lever system.
