Abstract

A liquid filled thermostat comprises a phial 2 which is exposed to a source of heat and connected to a first expansible element 3 e. g. a bellows or diaphragm, and also to a second expansible element 15, pre-loaded by a spring 16 and which is arranged not to expand appreciably until the pressure within the system rises above the range covered by the element 3. The thermostat may be used in an electric oven where high temperature cleaning is employed. In normal use the temperature is controlled by the element 3 which actuates a magnetic snap acting switch 14 by way of a lever, adjustably pivoted on a support 10, and a pusher 13. When cleaning is carried out, the temperature rises above the range covered by the element 3 and the second element 15 expands against the action of the spring 16 whose tension is set so that no appreciable expansion occurs until a desired pressure in the system is exceeded.
