Abstract

1,077,589. Automatic temperature control. SIEMENS - ELECTROGE RATE G.m.b.H. Sept. 14, 1964 [Sept. 18, 1963], No. 37534/64. Heading G3R. [Also in Division G1] The maximum and mean temperatures in a hot water container 1, Fig. 1, are measured respectively by a sensing element 16, and a chain of sensing elements 15, and are indicated on the same scale of an instrument (20) Fig.2 (not shown) by a moving vane (23) and a pointer (22) respectively. A required temperature is preset at 8, Fig. 1, by a knob (25) Fig. 2 (not shown) on the front of the instrument (20), and a heater 6 is operated in accordance with the temperature measured by a further sensing element 9, which may be a liquid expansion type. The sensing elements 15, 16 may be semi-conductor devices, thermistors, or liquid expansion type. The heater 6 may alternatively be controlled from the indicator itself by replacing the vane (23) and pointer (22) by two pointers (23, 22) Fig.3 (not shown) each having a contact (28, 27) which can engage a corresponding contact (31, 30) on a movable vane (29). The contacts (28, 31) are initially closed and the heater operates so that the maximum temperature pointer (23) and the mean temperature pointer (22) together move over the scale, the vane (29) following under spring pressure until the vane reaches a preset position, when the contacts (28, 31) open and turn off the heater. The heater is turned on again when the mean temperature pointer (22) falls far enough to close contacts (27, 30). The indicator pointers may be operated by moving coil instruments, by bi-metallic strips heated by a current depending on the resistance of the sensing elements 15, 16, or mechanically by liquid expansion type sensing elements. The indicator may take the form, alternatively, of glow tubes, or of a linear or drum-type scale.
