Abstract
Aromatic solvents are produced by fractionating a reformate, especially a platformate, to obtain a cut boiling within the A.S.T.M. distillation range 145 DEG -200 DEG C., and subsequently treating this cut with a small quantity of acid, preferably 0.1-3.0 vols. per 100 vols. cut, which is sulphuric acid containing more than 93% wt. H2SO4 or is oleum containing not more than 20% wt. SO3. The treatment may be effected at ambient temperatures. After the acid treatment the cut is desirably washed with water, alkali, and water in that order.
