A length of material e.g. carpeting is fed to a machine such as a finishing machine by a guide roll 4 and a spiked roll 1. If it becomes skewed, an operator on stand 5 can swing an arcuate plate 2 between the material and the roll 1 to lift the former off the spikes and can then straighten it manually. The plate 2 may be operated through a worm drive.
