Abstract

977,084. Apparatus for releasing liquid from compressed air systems. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. May 24, 1961 [July 4, 1960], No. 18745/61. Heading F4U. [Also in Division G3] A device for automatically draining condensation water from a compressed-air system comprises a chamber 12 in which the condensate collects during the time that the system is operative and from which it is discharged when the system becomes inoperative, the inlet port 14 and discharge port 16 for condensate being opened and closed by means actuated independently of the air pressure prevailing in the system. Such means may, in a compressed-air system associated with a motor vehicle, comprise a piston 17 actuated by an electromagnet energized by the ignition system, or by movement of a diaphram 27 in response to oil pressure in the lubricating system. Fig. 2a shows the system in its operative state in which the piston 17 has been moved downwardly by the diaphragm 27 so that the condensate discharge port 16 is closed by a valve 15. At the same time the chamber 12 is connected into the system when the port 14 from the compressed-air reservoir 2 is uncovered by the lifting of valve 13. The system also includes a load line 7 containing a non-return valve 37 which opens as the chamber 12 is pressurized. Fig. 2b shows the system in its inoperative state as for example when the vehicle engine is switched-off, whereupon the diaphram is moved upwardly by spring 29. The consequent upward movement of piston 17 closes the port 14, so isolating the chamber 12 from the airstorage reservoir 2, and opens the port 16, thus releasing from the chamber 12 any accumulated condensate. The reduction in pressure in chamber 12 causes closure of the non-return valve 37 so preventing loss of air from the system. Specification 939,414 is referred to.
